Once you've selected your environment in Step 1 – Environmental Parameters™, properly cycled your aquarium, and ensured your inhabitants are healthy, it's time to proceed to Step 2 – Algae & Nutrient Control™.

After cycling, your aquarium may experience the common "ugly stage," where the system seeks biochemical balance, potentially leading to a surge in nuisance algae. While this is normal and not cause for alarm, it's the ideal time to establish good maintenance habits to ensure your aquarium thrives.

Algae, a photosynthetic organism dependent on light and excess nutrients, can become overgrown, covering sand, rocks, glass, and even inhabitants. This can suffocate photosynthetic organisms like coral, leading to their death. Algae growth can also clog filters, increasing maintenance and turning your hobby into a chore. Reduced water flow to the filter can result in bacterial die-off and diminished water purification, potentially causing toxic molecule build-up and system failure. Additionally, decreased water flow can lower gas exchange, reducing oxygen levels and pH, causing stress or suffocation to your aquarium's inhabitants.

Managing nutrients is vital; it's a balancing act. You don't want nutrients to drop too low, as coral require them for essential biochemical processes. However, excessive nutrients can harm your reef. Fortunately, the solution is straightforward: identify which nutrients promote algae growth, implement control measures, and maintain a consistent upkeep routine.
