Step 2 — Algae & Nutrient Control / Phosphate Remover

Reef Essential® · Nutrient Control

Not all your phosphate shows up on a test.

Phosphate exists in two forms in your tank — ionic and chemically bound to calcium. Most test kits can't detect the bound form, which means a "low phosphate" reading can be misleading. This lanthanum-based media targets both.

Why "low phosphate" readings can be misleading

Phosphate exists both freely dissolved (ionic) and chemically bound by calcium in your tank. Bound phosphate doesn't register on standard test kits — so a low reading doesn't necessarily mean a low total phosphate load. It also causes calcium levels to fluctuate as it binds and releases.

This media removes the ionic form quickly, but bound phosphate takes longer to clear due to its higher stability — that's expected, not a sign the product isn't working.

2
forms

Ionic and calcium-bound — both exist in your tank at once, and only one shows up on basic test kits.

Ca
swings

Bound phosphate causes calcium fluctuations as it binds and releases, on top of masking your true phosphate load.

La
media

Purified lanthanum precipitates out both forms, catching them in your existing filter wool or socks.

Why excess phosphate matters

What high phosphate concentrations actually do to your tank, and how this product is built to handle it.

01

Aggressive algae blooms

High phosphate is one of the primary drivers of nuisance algae growth throughout the tank.

02

Brown coral tissue

Excess phosphate can increase brown tissue growth in corals, masking their natural vivid pigment.

03

Reduced skeleton growth

High phosphate reduces calcium carbonate uptake, which can negatively impact coral skeleton growth.

04

Contents

Deionized water and purified lanthanum — nothing else. Precipitates phosphate into your existing filter wool or socks.

05

Simple dosing

No shaking required. The cap doubles as a measuring cup — a full cap is approximately 8ml of solution.

06

Overdose is visible

A fine white film on the tank glass means you're using too much. Cut back your dose and use White Film Remover Pads to clean existing buildup.

Dosing guide

Must be used in a saltwater aquarium with a protein skimmer, added to a high water flow. Be careful not to overdose.

Questions about this product

How do I know if I'm overdosing?+
Watch the tank glass — a fine white film building up is the tell-tale sign. Cut back your dose and use White Film Remover Pads to safely clean any existing buildup.
Do I need a protein skimmer to use this?+
Yes — this product must be used in a saltwater aquarium with a protein skimmer, added to a high water flow area.
Why does my test kit disagree with what I'm dosing?+
Most test kits only measure ionic phosphate, not the chemically-bound form. If your kit reads low but you're still seeing algae growth, bound phosphate is a likely explanation — this product targets both forms, just at different speeds.
What's actually in this product?+
Deionized water and purified lanthanum. No shaking required — the bottle cap doubles as a measuring cup, at approximately 8ml per full cap.
