Maintaining a healthy and balanced environment is essential for your marine life, whether you have corals or fish. Ammonia build-up can be highly toxic within a saltwater tank, so it is imperative that you monitor these levels and combat any issues with a quality ammonia detoxifier for aquariums. Bio-Active Carbon™ is a high-quality water clarifier that helps adsorb organic molecules, such as coral toxins.
What Does Bio-Active Carbon Do?
Bio-Active Carbon has the ability to promote the growth of beneficial bacteria in your tank. These bacteria act as a biological filter, which helps to neutralize and eliminate the following from your aquarium water:
Odor: Odor is a by-product of the natural breakdown and build-up of organic waste in your tank. When these are removed, the odor will also be combated. Make sure you are cleaning your tank regularly and ensuring your fish are not being overfed, which leaves uneaten food to break down in the water.
Tannins: While tannins alone are not harmful to your marine life, they do alter the water chemistry, which can be detrimental to your aquarium's residents.
Heavy metals: These are chemicals such as copper and zinc, and in high quantities, they will be harmful to your marine life. Heavy metal poisoning will often cause your fish to gasp at the surface of the water.
Organic toxins: Natural breakdown in an aquarium is normal. However, the excess build-up of these elements can be detrimental—and sometimes fatal—to your marine life.
Ammonia/Ammonium: Most commonly caused by excess uneaten food, ammonia build-ups are highly toxic to both corals and fish.
Nitrites: Excess amounts of nitrites can lead to lethargy, poor color, poor immune system, and weakened feeding response.
When phenol (color) and tannin levels get too high in your water, the light can actually start to shade; this may cut down the usable PAR readings by up to 30%. However, Bio-Active Carbon removes phenols, along with organic waste, toxins, heavy metals, chlorine, and chloramine, without leaching phosphates or releasing the molecules it has absorbed back into your aquarium.
It's able to do this effectively because of its unique pore size-to-water surface area ratio, which helps to promote the growth of beneficial bacteria. It's these bacteria that help remove the harmful waste and toxins from your aquarium. Be sure you rinse your carbon with hydrochloric acid, as this will also help prevent phosphates being leached back into your aquarium. It also allows you to keep your carbon in longer without pulling too many vitamins and minerals out of your tank, which can cause issues to many SPSs.
Where It Can Be Used
Originally, this product was designed to be used in an ultra-pure water sanitization meant for human consumption! But it has found its place as a water clarifier and ammonia detoxifier.
