Step 2 — Algae & Nutrient Control / Bio-Active Carbon™
Reef Essential® · Water Clarifier
Built to filter — without stripping your tank bare.
Bio-Active Carbon™ was originally engineered for ultra-pure water sanitization for human consumption, then adapted into an aquarium water clarifier and ammonia detoxifier. A unique pore-size-to-surface-area ratio lets it promote beneficial bacteria growth — most carbon on the market can't do that.
What makes this different from other activated carbon
This isn't about carbon vs. other filtration methods — it's about how Bio-Active Carbon compares to typical activated carbon media on the market, on the traits that actually matter for a reef tank.
| Trait | Typical carbon | Bio-Active Carbon™ |
|---|---|---|
| Bacterial support | Pure adsorption only — no biological role | Pore-size-to-surface-area ratio promotes beneficial bacteria that help break down waste |
| Phosphate leaching | Can leach phosphate back into the water, especially without pre-rinsing | Doesn't leach phosphates back into your aquarium |
| Toxin release | Absorbed molecules can be released back into the water over time | Holds absorbed toxins, phenols, and organic waste without releasing them back |
| Trace element strip rate | Often pulls out vitamins and minerals aggressively — a known risk to SPS | Can be left in longer without pulling too many vitamins and minerals from the tank |
| Origin / purity grade | Varies — most is aquarium-grade only | Originally engineered for ultra-pure water sanitization meant for human consumption |
What it removes
The beneficial bacteria this carbon supports act as a biological filter, neutralizing and eliminating the following.
Odor
A by-product of organic waste breaking down. Regular cleaning and avoiding overfeeding help too.
Tannins
Not directly harmful, but they alter water chemistry in ways that can be detrimental to your tank's residents.
Heavy metals
Copper and zinc in high quantities are harmful to marine life — often showing up as fish gasping at the surface.
Organic toxins & ammonia
Ammonia/ammonium build-up, usually from uneaten food, is highly toxic to both corals and fish.
Nitrites
Excess nitrites can cause lethargy, poor color, a weakened immune system, and a weakened feeding response.
Phenols, chlorine & chloramine
High phenol/tannin levels can shade your light, cutting usable PAR readings by up to 30% — this carbon removes them too.
Dosing guide
Rinse in RODI water before use and replace monthly. Place in a high-flow area or a reactor on the slowest setting.
| Stocking level | Dose |
|---|---|
| Lightly stocked | 15g / month per 100L (26 gal) |
| Moderately stocked | 25g / month per 100L (26 gal) |
| Heavily stocked | 50g / month per 100L (26 gal) |
| Copper removal | 250g / month per 100L (26 gal) |
