Step 1 — Environmental Parameters / LPS Macro Probiotic Salt

Reef Essential® · Macro Probiotic Series

Built for the corals that expand more than they build.

LPS Macro Probiotic Salt mixes to the highest, steadiest alkalinity in the Quantum line — 10.1–10.5 dKH — matched to large-polyp corals that put their energy into fleshy tissue over dense skeleton.

The question we get the most

Why does LPS salt run so much higher alkalinity?

LPS corals put a lot of their energy into inflating fleshy tissue around a more porous skeleton — not into laying down dense skeleton the way SPS does. A higher, stable alkalinity baseline supports that tissue expansion without needing the razor-tight, daily dosing precision an SPS tank demands.

It's also a buffer, not just a target: LPS keepers typically test and dose less often than SPS keepers, so mixing the salt itself a little higher gives more headroom before alkalinity drifts down between water changes.

10.1–10.5
dKH

LPS alkalinity — the highest of any salt in the line, and the reason this tank type gets it own formula.

7.4–7.7
dKH

SPS alkalinity, for comparison — low and tight, the opposite end of the same spectrum.

70+
elements

Trace elements carried in from the natural South Australian seawater base, riding alongside the buffering minerals.

What's actually in the bag

Same clean formulation process across the whole line — here's what makes it up.

01

Hybrid seawater base

Natural seawater from South Australia blended with a synthetic mix — the ecosystem benefits of real seawater with the batch-to-batch consistency of a synthetic.

02

Macrobiotics & probiotics

Natural macrobiotics, probiotics and vitamin precursors formulated in to improve mineral uptake, support beneficial bacteria, and enhance fish vitality.

03

Humidity-controlled formulation

Mixed in a humidity-controlled environment for purity and stability, batch after batch — not just mixed and bagged.

04

Included ICP report

Every bag or bucket ships with a batch-specific ICP report — exact mix-to values plus the full trace element panel, tested in-house before it leaves us.

05

LPS-tuned Ca, Mg & K

Calcium, magnesium and potassium are all balanced around the higher alkalinity target — not just the buffering capacity alone.

06

Pairs with Step 3 & 4

The salt sets your baseline at every water change — Aragonite Enhancers and Bio-Active Color Intensifiers top up what your corals consume in between.

Questions about this salt

How much LPS salt do I need for my tank?+
Roughly 33.7–35.2 grams per liter of RODI water, depending on whether you're targeting 1.024 or 1.025 S.G. For an exact figure based on your tank volume and water change size, the Quantum dosing app will calculate it for you.
Do I still need Step 3 and Step 4 supplements?+
Yes, if you're running a mature LPS system. The salt sets your baseline alkalinity and calcium at every water change, but a growing reef consumes both between changes — Step 3 Aragonite Enhancers and Step 4 Bio-Active Color Intensifiers top that up.
Can I use LPS salt in a mixed SPS/LPS tank?+
You can, but the Mixed Macro Probiotic Salt is built specifically for that instead of running LPS salt in a tank with heavy SPS demand as well.
What's in the included ICP report?+
Each bag or bucket includes a batch-specific ICP (Inductively Coupled Plasma) report — the mix-to values for calcium, alkalinity, magnesium and potassium for that exact batch, plus the full trace element panel from the natural seawater base. Tested in-house before the batch ships.
