Step 1 — Environmental Parameters / FOWLR Macro Probiotic Salt

FOWLR Essential™ · Macro Probiotic Series

Built to cover more water than any other salt in the line.

FOWLR Macro Probiotic Salt spans 1.019–1.025 S.G. — from low-salinity fish-only quarantine setups up through full reef salinity — with no coral demand to chase along the way.

One salt, three salinities

Why does FOWLR cover such a wide S.G. range?

Fish-only-with-live-rock tanks are often run at a lower specific gravity than reef tanks — commonly for parasite and disease management — and then brought back up toward full reef salinity over time. Without coral demand pinning the tank to one narrow target, one salt can reasonably cover the whole practical range.

That's why the label carries three rows instead of two: 1.019 for low-salinity/quarantine conditions, up through 1.025 for tanks run closer to standard reef salinity.

1.019–1.025
S.G.

The widest specific gravity range of any salt in the line — the other four each cover a one- or two-point spread.

8.4–11.2
dKH

Alkalinity across that same range — moving with salinity rather than holding to one coral-driven target.

What's actually in the bag

Same clean formulation process across the whole line — here's what makes it up.

01

Hybrid seawater base

Natural seawater from South Australia blended with a synthetic mix — the ecosystem benefits of real seawater with the batch-to-batch consistency of a synthetic.

02

Macrobiotics & probiotics

Natural macrobiotics, probiotics and vitamin precursors formulated in to improve mineral uptake, support beneficial bacteria, and enhance fish vitality.

03

Humidity-controlled formulation

Mixed in a humidity-controlled environment for purity and stability, batch after batch — not just mixed and bagged.

04

Included ICP report

Every bag or bucket ships with a batch-specific ICP report — exact mix-to values plus the full trace element panel, tested in-house before it leaves us.

05

Fish-health-focused Ca, Mg & K

Mineral levels are set to support fish and beneficial bacteria across a range of salinities, not tuned to any single coral's photosynthetic demand.

06

No coral-driven consumption

Because FOWLR tanks don't carry heavy photosynthetic coral demand, this baseline typically holds well between water changes without needing reef-tank supplementation.

Questions about this salt

How much FOWLR salt do I need for my tank?+
Anywhere from 26.8 to 35.7 grams per liter of RODI water, depending on which S.G. you're targeting across the 1.019–1.025 range. For an exact figure based on your tank volume, water change size, and target salinity, the Quantum dosing app will calculate it for you.
Which S.G. should I run for a fish-only-with-live-rock tank?+
It depends on your goals — lower salinity (toward 1.019) is commonly used for parasite and disease management, while tanks run closer to standard reef conditions typically sit nearer 1.025. There's no single right answer; it depends on what you're managing in the tank.
Do I still need Step 3 and Step 4 supplements?+
Usually not. FOWLR tanks don't carry the heavy photosynthetic coral demand that drives calcium and alkalinity consumption in reef tanks, so this salt's baseline typically holds well on its own between water changes.
What's in the included ICP report?+
Each bag or bucket includes a batch-specific ICP (Inductively Coupled Plasma) report — the mix-to values for calcium, alkalinity, magnesium and potassium for that exact batch, plus the full trace element panel from the natural seawater base. Tested in-house before the batch ships.
