Once you have established your nutrient target parameters and implemented control methods, as outlined in Step 2 – Algae & Nutrient Control™, it's time to explore aragonite and the parameters affecting its formation. The model used to simplify the three main components is represented by the ‘CAM’ abbreviation: ‘C’ for Calcium, ‘A’ for Alkalinity, and ‘M’ for Magnesium. Corals require a variety of elements and molecules to form strong aragonite instead of brittle calcite.

Aragonite is preferred in reef aquariums due to its resistance to pH fluctuations, greater hardness, and increased density. Step 3 – Aragonite Enhancers™ emphasizes calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium as the main components, with strontium and barium as minor components. Corals absorb elements from aquarium water, which decreases their concentration. If these concentrations drop, it can lead to issues such as greater pH fluctuations, reduced bone density, and increased parameter swings. Additionally, imbalances in the ratio of these elements can enhance the uptake of other elements, possibly resulting in brittle calcite formation and hindered growth.

A strong chemical foundation of calcium carbonate in the reef bed is vital for promoting robust skeletal structures for corals. The structure of calcium carbonate is crucial for supporting the growth and health of corals and other marine life. This is why the CAM acronym is used, as each of these parameters is essential to fostering the desired aragonite structure.

In essence, while aragonite and calcite share the same chemical composition, being calcium carbonate, they differ in the arrangement of calcium and carbonate ions within their structures. Aragonite’s ion arrangement leads to a more stable and durable material. A parallel example is the difference between diamonds and graphite in pencils; both share the same chemical makeup, yet diamonds are significantly stronger due to their bonding structure.
