FOWLR
FOWLR stands for Fish Only With Live Rock. It’s a saltwater aquarium with no corals.
The Aqua Care Guide™ gives FOWLR tanks their own parameter table, and says those values are for FOWLR aquariums only.
Why It’s Important
- It decides which salt and targets you follow. FOWLR Macro Probiotic Salt™ is made for these tanks.
- That salt provides high calcium, alkalinity, magnesium and potassium relative to specific gravity, which the Guide says helps pH and KH stability.
- It also supplies the major, minor and trace elements, with the aim of fish health and vitality.
How It Works
The Guide’s FOWLR targets at 25°C (77°F) change with specific gravity:
- S.G. 1.019: calcium 350 ppm, alkalinity 8.4 dKH, magnesium 1,080 ppm, potassium 300 ppm
- S.G. 1.022: calcium 410 ppm, alkalinity 9.8 dKH, magnesium 1,260 ppm, potassium 350 ppm
- S.G. 1.025: calcium 470 ppm, alkalinity 11.2 dKH, magnesium 1,450 ppm, potassium 410 ppm
FOWLR and Related Terms
A FOWLR tank still depends on live rock, a good salt mix and steady specific gravity. The manufacturer describes its FOWLR salt as a hybrid of natural seawater and synthetic salt.
The Bottom Line
FOWLR is a fish-only tank with live rock and no corals, and it follows its own targets. Compare the salts in the environmental salts collection.
