Built into the skeleton itself
Boron is present in coral skeleton, contributing directly to strong coral skeleton formation by promoting calcification and the production of durable aragonite instead of brittle calcite.
A structural, not metabolic, role
Unlike the transition metals, boron's job is largely structural — it becomes part of the physical skeleton matrix as corals calcify, rather than acting as an enzyme cofactor.
Skeleton-building stony corals
SPS and other fast-calcifying stony corals depositing dense skeleton draw on boron most heavily — a bigger factor here than in soft-coral or fish-only systems.
