Rather than assuming purification equipment is performing adequately, a TDS meter provides an objective, immediate confirmation of actual output water quality.

TDS meters have become inexpensive and widely accessible, making regular testing a realistic, low-cost habit for reef keepers of every experience level rather than a specialized or optional practice reserved for advanced setups.

How It Works

A TDS meter passes a small electrical current between two probes submerged in a water sample, measuring the resulting conductivity, which increases predictably as dissolved ionic solids become more concentrated. Because pure water conducts electricity poorly while dissolved minerals conduct it readily, this conductivity reading translates directly into an estimated total dissolved solids value.

Reef keepers typically test TDS at the final output point of their RODI system, checking regularly enough to catch a rising trend before deionization resin becomes fully exhausted and allows meaningful impurities back into the purified water supply.

TDS Meter and Related Concepts

A TDS meter is closely tied to TDS itself, the measurement it’s specifically designed to capture, and to RODI water and reverse osmosis, the purification processes it’s used to verify. It’s also relevant to reference solution and calibration, practices that help ensure a TDS meter’s readings remain accurate over time.

Reef keepers relying on a simpler RO-only system, without a following deionization stage, generally need to check their TDS meter more frequently, since RO membranes alone don’t guarantee the very low readings a combined RODI system typically achieves.

Many RODI systems include a built-in, inline TDS meter for continuous monitoring, though periodically cross-checking with a separate handheld meter helps confirm the inline reading hasn’t drifted out of accuracy.

TDS meter probes should be rinsed and stored properly after each use, since residue buildup can occasionally affect reading accuracy over time if the probes aren’t kept reasonably clean.

Common Misconception

A common misconception is that a TDS meter provides a complete picture of water purity on its own. In reality, TDS measures dissolved ionic solids broadly and doesn’t detect certain organic contaminants, making it a valuable but not entirely comprehensive purity verification tool.
