RODI Water
RODI water is water that has passed through both a reverse osmosis membrane and a following deionization stage using ion exchange resin, together removing nearly all dissolved minerals, metals, and contaminants present in the original tap or source water. While reverse osmosis alone removes the vast majority of impurities, the additional deionization step strips out the small amount of residual dissolved solids RO leaves behind, producing water with a TDS reading close to zero.
Because reef tanks are so sensitive to contaminants like phosphate, nitrate, silicates, and heavy metals commonly found in tap water, RODI water has become the standard, widely recommended source water for both initial saltwater mixing and ongoing top-off and water changes.

How It Works
Source water first passes through a reverse osmosis membrane, which removes the majority of dissolved solids under pressure, before flowing through a deionization cartridge filled with ion exchange resin that captures the small amount of remaining charged particles. The combined two-stage process typically brings TDS down to 0-1 parts per million, dramatically purer than reverse osmosis alone can achieve.
Because the deionization resin gradually becomes saturated with captured impurities, most RODI systems include a color-changing indicator or require periodic TDS testing to confirm the resin is still performing effectively before it needs replacement.
RODI Water and Related Concepts
RODI water is closely tied to reverse osmosis and RO water, the earlier purification stages it builds on, and to TDS and TDS meters, the tools used to verify its actual purity. It’s also relevant to salt mix and source water more broadly, since RODI water forms the base every batch of saltwater is built from.
Reef keepers setting up a new RODI system typically test output TDS regularly at first to confirm proper installation, then periodically thereafter to catch resin exhaustion before it allows impurities back into the water supply.
Storage matters for RODI water just as much as production, since even perfectly purified water can pick up contaminants from a dirty or previously used storage container, making clean, dedicated containers an important part of a complete RODI setup.
Some reef keepers run their RODI system continuously into a large storage reservoir rather than producing water on demand, ensuring a ready supply is always available for water changes and top-off without waiting on production time.
Common Misconception
A common misconception is that reverse osmosis alone is functionally equivalent to RODI water. In reality, RO alone still allows a small amount of dissolved solids through, and the additional deionization stage is what brings TDS down to the near-zero level most reef tanks genuinely require.
