Reverse osmosis, commonly abbreviated RO, is a water purification process that forces tap or source water through a semipermeable membrane under pressure, removing a significant majority of dissolved impurities, minerals, and contaminants in the process. As the first major stage in most reef keeping water purification systems, reverse osmosis produces water dramatically cleaner than typical tap water, though it doesn’t remove every last trace of dissolved solids on its own.

Because reef tanks are so sensitive to contaminants like phosphate, nitrate, and various metals commonly found in tap water, reverse osmosis has become an essential, foundational step for producing safe, appropriate source water for both initial setup and ongoing water changes.

How It Works

Reverse osmosis pushes water under pressure through a specialized semipermeable membrane with pores small enough to block dissolved minerals, salts, and many other contaminants while allowing water molecules themselves to pass through. The resulting purified water, called permeate, exits separately from the concentrated waste water carrying the removed impurities, which is typically discarded down a drain.

Because reverse osmosis membranes gradually lose effectiveness as they accumulate trapped particles and scale, periodic replacement is necessary to maintain consistent purification performance, with membrane lifespan varying based on source water quality and usage volume.

Reverse Osmosis and Related Concepts

Reverse osmosis is closely tied to RO water and RODI water, the purified products it produces, particularly once combined with a following deionization stage. It’s also relevant to TDS and TDS meters, since dissolved solids readings are the primary way reef keepers verify their RO system’s ongoing performance.

Reef keepers typically pair reverse osmosis with a deionization stage using ion exchange resin, since RO alone, while highly effective, still allows a small amount of dissolved solids through that DI resin then removes almost entirely.

Source water quality significantly affects reverse osmosis system performance and membrane lifespan, meaning reef keepers working with particularly hard or contaminated tap water may need more frequent membrane replacement or pre-filtration stages to maintain consistent output quality.

Pre-filters, typically sediment and carbon cartridges installed ahead of the RO membrane itself, help protect the membrane from chlorine and larger particles, meaningfully extending its usable lifespan before replacement becomes necessary.

Common Misconception

A common misconception is that reverse osmosis alone produces water pure enough for direct reef tank use without further treatment. In reality, RO membranes leave behind some dissolved minerals, and pairing RO with deionization is generally necessary to achieve the very low TDS reef tanks require.
