Precipitation, within reef tank chemistry, refers to the process by which dissolved compounds, most notably calcium carbonate, come out of solution and form solid particles rather than remaining dissolved in the water. This typically occurs when calcium and carbonate ion concentrations exceed what the water can hold in solution together, often due to imbalanced dosing or insufficient magnesium, which normally helps keep these ions stable.

Understanding precipitation helps explain several practical reef keeping observations, from why aggressive or imbalanced dosing can cause temporarily cloudy water to why maintaining proper magnesium levels is so important for successful calcium and alkalinity supplementation.

How It Works

When calcium and carbonate ion concentrations become too high relative to what the water can hold in solution, particularly when magnesium is insufficient to help stabilize them, these ions can bond together and precipitate out as solid calcium carbonate particles, sometimes visible as a temporary cloudiness. This wastes the supplements involved, since the precipitated calcium carbonate is no longer available for coral use in dissolved form.

Dosing calcium and alkalinity supplements too quickly, in too concentrated a form, or too close together in timing significantly increases precipitation risk, which is part of why gradual, well-spaced dosing is generally recommended over large, infrequent additions.

A visibly cloudy tank shortly after dosing is a useful, if inconvenient, signal that dosing technique or magnesium levels likely need review, giving reef keepers a fairly immediate way to catch and correct the underlying issue.

Common Misconception

A common misconception is that cloudy water following dosing is always a sign of something dangerous happening. While it does indicate wasted supplementation through precipitation, it’s not typically directly harmful to livestock, though it does signal that dosing technique or magnesium levels likely need adjustment.
