Nutrient import refers to all the various ways nutrients enter a reef tank’s water, most significantly through feeding, livestock waste, and to a lesser extent through source water or top-off. As the counterpart to nutrient export, understanding nutrient import helps reef keepers recognize that managing nutrient levels isn’t only about removal, it’s equally about understanding and controlling what’s going into the system in the first place.

Reef keepers who track nutrient import alongside export often find it easier to diagnose the root cause of a persistent nutrient imbalance, since addressing excessive input can sometimes resolve a problem more effectively than simply increasing export capacity.

How It Works

Every time a reef tank is fed, whether target feeding corals directly or broadcast feeding fish, some portion of that food contributes to nutrient import, either through direct consumption and eventual waste production or through uneaten food breaking down in the water. Livestock themselves also continuously import nutrients through normal waste production, meaning even a tank that’s never actively fed still experiences some ongoing nutrient import from its inhabitants.

Source water can also introduce nutrients if it isn’t sufficiently purified, which is part of why RO/DI water is so strongly recommended over tap water for reef tank use, since tap water often carries measurable levels of nitrate, phosphate, or other unwanted compounds.

Nutrient import is closely tied to nutrient export and nutrient balance, the concepts it directly complements, and to feeding practices and bioload, the primary drivers of how much nutrient import a given tank experiences. Overstocking a tank relative to its filtration and export capacity is one of the most common ways nutrient import ends up outpacing what a system can reasonably handle, making stocking decisions an important, often overlooked factor in overall nutrient management.
