Gas exchange refers to the process by which dissolved gases, most importantly oxygen and carbon dioxide, move between aquarium water and the surrounding air, occurring primarily at the water’s surface where the two meet. Efficient gas exchange is essential for maintaining adequate dissolved oxygen for livestock and for helping regulate the water’s pH by allowing excess CO2 to escape.

Because gas exchange happens almost entirely at the surface, factors that increase surface area contact and water movement, like agitation from powerheads, return pumps, and protein skimmers, play an outsized role in how effectively a tank exchanges gases with the surrounding air.

How It Works

A tank with poor surface agitation, even one with otherwise strong internal flow, can experience reduced gas exchange efficiency, since flow alone doesn’t guarantee the surface disruption needed to maximize contact with the air above.

Rooms with poor ventilation can sometimes create elevated ambient CO2 levels that reduce the effectiveness of gas exchange even with strong surface agitation, since the process depends on a meaningful difference between CO2 concentration in the water and in the surrounding air. Reef keepers troubleshooting persistent low pH sometimes find that improving room ventilation, not just tank flow, resolves the underlying issue.

Some equipment, like a properly sized protein skimmer, contributes meaningfully to gas exchange as a secondary benefit alongside its primary filtration role, since the fine bubbles and turbulent contact inside a skimmer body significantly increase the surface area available for gas transfer. This is one reason a malfunctioning or undersized skimmer can sometimes coincide with broader gas exchange issues, even when the tank’s main return pump and powerheads appear to be functioning normally.

A common misconception is that strong internal water flow alone guarantees efficient gas exchange. In reality, gas exchange depends specifically on surface agitation and air contact, meaning a tank can have powerful circulation throughout while still exchanging gases poorly if the surface itself stays relatively undisturbed.
