As a simple, low-cost form of mechanical filtration, they’re a common fixture in reef tank sumps of nearly every size.

While effective at removing visible particulate waste, filter socks require regular attention, since trapped debris left in place too long begins breaking down and releasing the very nutrients the sock was meant to remove.
