Coral Bleaching

Coral bleaching is the process by which corals expel their symbiotic algae, causing them to turn white or pale. It's typically triggered by stress from temperature swings, light changes, or poor water quality, and can be fatal if the coral doesn't recover its algae in time.

Coral Bleaching

Coral bleaching is the visible result of a coral expelling the symbiotic algae, called zooxanthellae, that normally live within its tissue and give it both color and a major source of nutrition. When a coral is stressed, it can lose these algae, revealing its white skeleton through nearly transparent tissue and leaving it pale or fully bleached in appearance.

Bleaching is not itself immediate death, but it is a serious warning sign: a bleached coral has lost much of its energy supply and is vulnerable to starvation and disease if favorable conditions don’t return quickly.

How It Works

Zooxanthellae live inside coral tissue in a mutually beneficial relationship, photosynthesizing and sharing the resulting nutrients with their coral host in exchange for shelter and access to light. When conditions become stressful enough, whether from a temperature spike, a sudden light change, or degraded water quality, the coral expels these algae as a stress response, leaving its tissue pale and translucent.

If the stressor is removed quickly, corals can sometimes reacquire zooxanthellae and recover their color and health. If the stress continues, though, the coral is left without its main energy source and can eventually starve or succumb to secondary infection.

Coral Bleaching and Related Concepts

Coral bleaching is closely tied to zooxanthellae and coral coloration, since color loss is the most visible symptom of the underlying algae expulsion. It’s also connected to temperature stability, lighting acclimation, and water quality, the most common triggers behind a bleaching event in a home reef tank.

Recovery from bleaching depends heavily on how quickly the underlying stressor is identified and corrected, as well as how severe and prolonged the bleaching event was. A coral that’s lost most of its zooxanthellae but still has living tissue can sometimes reacquire algae and rebuild its color over weeks to months, provided conditions stabilize and the coral isn’t simultaneously fighting off starvation or infection. In a home aquarium, common triggers include sudden temperature spikes from equipment failure, aggressive lighting changes without proper acclimation, and sharp swings in salinity or other major parameters, all of which are largely preventable with careful, gradual husbandry practices.

Common Misconception

A common misconception is that a bleached coral is already dead. While bleaching is a serious and urgent signal, many corals can recover if the stressor causing it is identified and corrected promptly, since the coral’s skeleton and tissue may still be alive even after the algae are gone.
