Copper occupies an unusual position in the reef hobby, showing up in two very different contexts. At the trace concentrations naturally present in seawater, copper is a normal, harmless part of a tank’s mineral profile. At the much higher concentrations used therapeutically to treat certain fish parasites, however, copper becomes extremely toxic, not to the fish being treated, but to corals and most invertebrates, which have almost no tolerance for it.
Because of this stark difference, copper requires careful, deliberate handling depending on which context it’s being used in, and the two should never be allowed to overlap in the same system.

Because these treatment-level concentrations would be lethal to corals and most invertebrates, medicated copper treatment is always conducted in a separate system, never in a display tank housing a mixed reef community.

The genuine risk comes from treatment-level copper accidentally reaching a reef display, often through cross-contaminated nets, containers, or other equipment shared between a treatment tank and the display.
