Chlorine is a chemical disinfectant widely added to municipal tap water supplies to control bacteria, pathogens, and other microorganisms, keeping drinking water safe for human use. While it does its job well for that purpose, chlorine is toxic to fish, invertebrates, and the beneficial bacteria that drive a reef tank’s biological filtration, making its complete removal a necessary step before tap water is ever used in an aquarium.
Compared to chloramine, its more chemically stable cousin, chlorine is generally easier to remove, which shapes how most hobbyists approach source water treatment.

How It Works

In areas where only chlorine, and not chloramine, is used for disinfection, simpler carbon block filtration can sometimes be sufficient on its own.
Because chlorine is less chemically stable than chloramine, it also breaks down somewhat over time when water is exposed to air and sunlight, though this passive process alone isn’t considered a reliable removal method for aquarium use.
Chlorine and Related Parameters
Chlorine is closely tied to chloramine, the related but more stable disinfectant some municipal systems use instead, and to reverse osmosis and RODI water, the filtration processes typically used to remove it. It’s also relevant to source water and activated carbon, the primary tool used to strip it from tap water.
Beyond carbon filtration, some hobbyists also use liquid dechlorinators as a backup or emergency measure, particularly when topping off with tap water in a pinch rather than properly filtered water. These products chemically neutralize chlorine almost instantly, though they’re generally viewed as a stopgap rather than a substitute for a proper RO/DI system for routine water changes. Because chlorine byproducts can also form compounds harmful to invertebrates even after the chlorine itself is neutralized, most experienced reef keepers still prefer full filtration over chemical neutralization as their primary approach.
Common Misconception
A common misconception is that letting tap water sit out for a day is a reliable way to remove chlorine before using it in a reef tank. This method is inconsistent at best and does nothing to address chloramine if it’s present instead, making proper filtration a much safer and more dependable standard practice.
