While heaters address water that’s too cold, a chiller solves the opposite problem, water that runs too warm, whether from a hot climate, a sunny room, or heat generated by the tank’s own lighting and pumps.

For many reef keepers, a chiller isn’t an optional accessory but a necessary piece of equipment for keeping temperature consistently within a coral-safe range year-round.

How It Works

Water is pumped from the tank or sump through the chiller unit, where a refrigeration system cools it before returning it to the aquarium. A built-in thermostat or controller monitors water temperature and activates the chiller only when needed, cycling on and off to maintain a set target temperature rather than running continuously.

Chillers are typically sized based on tank volume and the amount of excess heat a system generates, with larger tanks or heavier equipment loads generally requiring a more powerful unit to keep pace.

A chiller works alongside a heater to maintain overall temperature stability, and it’s closely tied to temperature itself as the parameter it directly controls. It’s also relevant to water stability more broadly, since consistent temperature is one of several factors that together create a stable environment for reef livestock.

In-line chillers tend to be more efficient and are generally preferred for larger systems, while drop-in units are often simpler to install in smaller setups. Sizing a chiller correctly matters: an undersized unit will struggle to keep pace during warmer months and may run constantly without ever fully reaching the target temperature, while a well-matched unit cycles on and off efficiently, holding temperature steady without unnecessary strain on the equipment.

Common Misconception

A common misconception is that a chiller is only necessary in naturally hot climates. In reality, even tanks in moderate climates can see temperatures climb from lighting fixtures and return pumps, especially in smaller-volume systems with less thermal mass to buffer against that added heat.
