Without an effective buffer in place, these ongoing pressures would cause pH to swing far more dramatically than most livestock could comfortably tolerate.

In seawater, the primary buffering system is the same bicarbonate and carbonate chemistry that makes up alkalinity, which is why the two concepts are so closely linked in reef keeping.

Buffer supplements and products work by adding more of these same bicarbonate and carbonate compounds to the water, directly increasing both alkalinity and the tank’s overall resistance to pH swings.

Some buffer products are marketed specifically to raise pH rather than alkalinity, which can create confusion since the two are so closely linked in seawater chemistry. In most cases, adding a genuine buffering compound raises both alkalinity and, indirectly, pH stability together, rather than allowing a reef keeper to adjust one without affecting the other in a meaningful way.
