Bioload refers to the total amount of waste-producing life and organic material in an aquarium, including fish, corals, and feeding. A tank's filtration, water changes, and nutrient export methods all need to keep pace with its bioload to maintain stable, healthy water quality.

Bioload describes the total demand placed on a reef aquarium’s filtration system by the fish, corals, and other livestock it houses, along with the food fed and organic material generated as a result. Every animal in the tank contributes waste in some form, and the more livestock and feeding a system supports, the greater the ongoing demand on biological filtration, nutrient export, and water changes.

Understanding bioload helps reef keepers make more informed stocking and feeding decisions, rather than treating tank size alone as the only limit on how much a system can support.

General stocking guidelines, like inches of fish per gallon, are a rough starting point at best, since they don’t account for feeding habits, coral load, or filtration capacity.
