This is different from the beneficial bacteria living on rock, sand, and filter media, which form fixed colonies rather than drifting freely through the water.
Blooms are most common during the early stages of setting up a new tank, but they can also appear in established systems after a significant disruption or organic load increase, and in most cases they resolve on their own once conditions stabilize.
