Aragonite

Aragonite is a crystalline form of calcium carbonate and the primary material that makes up coral skeletons, reef sand, and live rock. As corals grow, they continuously deposit aragonite, making it one of the fundamental building materials behind a healthy, structurally sound reef.

Aragonite is a naturally occurring crystalline form of calcium carbonate, and it’s the specific form that stony corals, coralline algae, and many other reef organisms use to build their hard structures. While calcium carbonate can also form as calcite, a different crystal structure, aragonite is the form favored by marine calcifiers under typical seawater chemistry, which is why it dominates coral skeletons, reef sand, and live rock throughout natural reef systems.

In a reef aquarium, aragonite shows up both as the living skeletal material corals are actively building and as the inert substrate many hobbyists choose for their sand bed and base rock.

How It Works

Corals build their skeletons by precipitating aragonite crystals from calcium and carbonate ions absorbed from the surrounding water, a process closely tied to alkalinity and calcium levels. This calcification happens continuously as healthy corals grow, layer by layer, extending their skeletal structure.

As inert substrate, aragonite sand and rock behave differently. Rather than actively growing, they can slowly dissolve at the surface when water chemistry conditions call for it, releasing small amounts of calcium and carbonate back into the water and offering a mild natural buffering effect over time.

Sand bed depth is one practical consideration tied to aragonite substrate. A thin bed offers less buffering surface but is easier to keep free of detritus buildup, while a deeper bed provides more surface area and can support denitrifying bacteria in its lower, oxygen-poor layers. Neither approach is universally correct, and the right choice often depends on a tank’s overall bioload and maintenance routine.

In reality, aragonite sand offers meaningfully more buffering capacity and biological surface area than plain silica sand or other non-aragonite substrates, which is why it’s specifically recommended for reef systems rather than freshwater-style substrates. The material itself, not just its appearance, is what makes it useful.
