Ammonia

Ammonia is a toxic nitrogen compound produced by fish waste, uneaten food, and decaying organic matter. As the first stage of the nitrogen cycle, even small amounts of ammonia can stress or harm fish and invertebrates, making it one of the most closely monitored parameters in a new aquarium.

Ammonia is a nitrogen-based compound produced continuously in an aquarium through fish respiration, waste, uneaten food, and the breakdown of other organic matter. It’s the first and most toxic stage of the nitrogen cycle, the biological process that converts harmful waste products into progressively safer compounds. Because ammonia is toxic even in very small concentrations, it’s one of the first parameters hobbyists learn to test for and one of the most important during the early life of a tank.

Once a tank is fully cycled, ammonia is typically kept near zero by beneficial bacteria, but understanding how and why it appears helps reef keepers respond quickly if something disrupts that balance.

How It Works

Ammonia is constantly produced as fish and other livestock process food and release waste, and it’s also generated as excess food and organic debris break down. In a healthy, established tank, beneficial bacteria, primarily Nitrosomonas species, convert this ammonia into nitrite almost as quickly as it’s produced, keeping levels effectively at zero.

During the initial setup of a new tank, this bacterial population hasn’t developed yet, which is why ammonia can build up and spike before the nitrogen cycle fully establishes itself. This same vulnerability can reappear later if the bacterial colony is disrupted, such as after a major filter cleaning, a course of medication, or a sudden increase in bioload.

Ammonia and the Nitrogen Cycle

Ammonia is the starting point of the nitrogen cycle, converting into nitrite and eventually nitrate as beneficial bacteria process it in sequence. It’s closely tied to bioload, since more fish and feeding means more ammonia being produced at any given time, and to new tank syndrome, the period of instability many tanks experience before their bacterial colonies mature. Common Misconception

Many hobbyists assume ammonia is only a concern during the initial cycling of a new tank. In reality, ammonia spikes can happen in mature, fully cycled systems too, particularly after events that disrupt the bacterial colony or suddenly increase bioload, such as adding several new fish at once or overfeeding. Established tanks aren’t immune to ammonia issues, they’re just less likely to experience them under normal conditions.
