An algae bloom is a rapid, often sudden overgrowth of algae in an aquarium, usually triggered by excess nutrients, light, or a lack of competition from other organisms. While a normal part of a young or shifting reef system, persistent blooms usually signal an imbalance that needs to be addressed.

This rapid multiplication is what creates the visible “bloom.”

Blooms are especially common in new tanks, where the biological filtration needed to process waste hasn’t fully established yet, allowing nutrients to accumulate. In mature systems, a bloom more often points to a recent change, such as increased feeding, a lighting adjustment, or a drop in nutrient export.

Different algae types tend to signal different triggers. Diatoms, which often appear as a brownish dusting in new tanks, typically respond to silicate and available nutrients during early cycling. Cyanobacteria, sometimes mistaken for algae, tends to show up as a reddish or green slime in areas of low flow, often pointing to detritus buildup rather than elevated nitrate alone. Recognizing which type of bloom is occurring can help narrow down the likely cause faster than treating all blooms the same way.
