Activated Carbon

Activated carbon is a porous filtration media used to remove dissolved organic compounds, toxins, and discoloration from aquarium water. By binding unwanted molecules to its surface, it helps keep water clear, controls odors, and supports overall water quality in a reef system.

Activated Carbon

Activated carbon is one of the most widely used forms of chemical filtration in the reef aquarium hobby. Made from carbon-rich material that’s been processed to create an enormous internal surface area full of microscopic pores, it works by pulling dissolved organic compounds, discoloration-causing tannins, and various toxins out of aquarium water as it passes through.

Unlike mechanical filtration, which physically traps debris, or biological filtration, which relies on bacteria, activated carbon works chemically, binding unwanted molecules to its surface as water flows past. This makes it a valuable tool for maintaining water clarity and quality alongside other filtration methods.

Why It’s Important

  • Removes tannins and other compounds that cause water to appear yellow or tinted, improving overall clarity.
  • Strips dissolved toxins from the water, including residues left behind by medications or treatments.

How It Works

Activated carbon’s effectiveness comes down to surface area. The activation process creates a dense network of tiny pores throughout each granule, giving a small amount of carbon an enormous amount of internal surface. As water passes through or around the carbon, dissolved molecules bind to this surface, a process known as adsorption.

Reef keepers typically run activated carbon in a filter bag, reactor, or media basket positioned in a high-flow area, allowing consistent water contact. Over time, the carbon’s surface becomes saturated with bound compounds and its effectiveness declines, which is why it needs to be replaced regularly rather than left in the system indefinitely.

Different carbon types are manufactured from different source materials, such as coconut shell or bituminous coal, which can affect pore structure and how quickly the media works. Regardless of source, the underlying mechanism stays the same: a large, porous surface doing the work of capturing dissolved compounds as water moves through it.

Activated Carbon and Related Filtration Methods

Activated carbon is one of several chemical filtration media reef keepers use alongside GFO and other adsorptive materials, each targeting different compounds in the water. It works through the same underlying principle as adsorption more broadly, and it’s often discussed alongside protein skimming and mechanical filtration as part of a complete filtration strategy. Together, these methods address different aspects of water quality, from dissolved organics to particulate waste to nutrient buildup.

Common Misconception

Many hobbyists describe activated carbon as “absorbing” impurities, but this isn’t quite accurate. Carbon works through adsorption, binding molecules to its surface rather than drawing them into its interior. Another common misconception is that carbon can simply be left in the tank indefinitely once added. In reality, its capacity is finite, and old, saturated carbon not only stops helping but can potentially leach back some of what it’s captured, making regular replacement an important part of using it effectively.
