Acclimation
Acclimation is the process of slowly transitioning new livestock from the water they arrived in, whether a shipping bag, store bag, or transport container, to the water conditions of the tank they’re joining. Because bag water and tank water rarely match exactly in temperature, salinity, and pH, a sudden switch can shock a fish or coral’s system. Acclimation exists to close that gap gradually, giving the animal time to adjust rather than forcing it to adapt all at once.
While it might seem like a small step compared to lighting, flow, or dosing, acclimation is often the difference between a new addition thriving and one that struggles from day one.

The length and intensity of acclimation usually depends on the animal. Fish and sensitive invertebrates typically benefit from a longer, more gradual process, while some corals need less time since they’re less affected by rapid salinity shifts than fish are. In all cases, the goal is the same: give the animal’s body time to adjust rather than dropping it into a completely different environment.

Skipping the slower salinity acclimation step, even after properly matching temperature, is one of the most common reasons new arrivals struggle in their first few days.
